Two new average speed control zones begin operations near Riga ring road in Ogre

Two new average speed control zones have started operating on the Riga ring road near Ogre, aimed at monitoring vehicle speed and various compliance standards.

Today, two new average speed control zones have been established on the Riga ring road near Ogre, as announced by the state-owned roadway service, VSIA "Latvijas valsts ceΔΌi" (LVC). These zones will monitor average vehicle speed on the sections from the Baltezers-Saulkalne junction to the bridge over the Little Jugla River and from the Ulbroka-Ogre junction to the overpass over the Daugavpils highway. This initiative signifies a step towards enhancing road safety and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations.

The new control systems are intended to enforce not only speed limits but also to check for mandatory civil liability insurance (OCTA) for vehicle owners, the technical inspection status of vehicles, and compliance with road usage fees. This year, the implementation of a total of 17 new average speed control zones is planned across the state’s road network. Furthermore, three new average speed control zones have already been established earlier this year on the Tallinn and Liepaja highways, indicating a broader strategic effort by the authorities to manage roadway safety and compliance more effectively.

These measures come in response to ongoing concerns about road safety in Latvia. By increasing enforcement mechanisms, the government aims to deter speeding and ensure that all vehicles comply with necessary legal standards. The introduction of these controls is expected to contribute to a safer driving environment, potentially reducing accidents and enhancing accountability among road users.
