Six new average speed control sections begin operating in Latvia

Latvia has introduced six new average speed control sections aimed at enhancing road safety and compliance with traffic regulations.

Today, Latvia launched six new sections for average speed control, a move communicated by the State of Latvia Road Authority (VSIA "Latvijas valsts ceΔΌi"). These sections are located on critical roadways including the Vidzeme Highway and the Daugavpils Highway, targeting routes that have seen significant traffic flow and potential speed violations. The average speed cameras will monitor the speeds of vehicles between specified points, ensuring adherence to legal limits as well as checking vehicle registration and insurance compliance.

The implementation of these controls is part of a broader initiative to introduce a total of 17 new speed monitoring sections across the national road network this year. Notably, earlier this year on February 25, three new sections were already activated, indicating a proactive approach by Latvian authorities to bolster road safety. This strategic deployment aims to mitigate road accidents and promote safer driving practices across the nation, particularly in areas prone to speeding.

The use of technology in monitoring traffic patterns not only enhances compliance with traffic regulations but is also expected to encourage more responsible driving behaviors among motorists. With increasing vehicle ownership and traffic congestion in Latvia, the expansion of speed control systems represents a necessary step towards modernizing road safety measures and protecting both drivers and pedestrians alike.
