Portugal has ten new restaurants with one star in the Michelin Guide
The Michelin Guide awarded ten new Portuguese restaurants with one star during a ceremony in Funchal, Madeira, increasing Portugal's total to 53 starred establishments.
The Michelin Guide, a prestigious reference in global gastronomy, has recently recognized ten new Portuguese restaurants with a single star in a ceremony held on October 10th in Funchal, on the Island of Madeira. This addition brings Portugal's total number of starred restaurants to 53, showcasing the country's growing reputation in gourmet cuisine. The Michelin Guide has provided a dedicated edition for Portugal for the past three years, categorizing restaurants into three tiers based on their culinary excellence: one star for refined dining, two stars for excellent cuisine, and three stars for exceptional cuisine.
Among the notable updates, nine restaurants were awarded two stars, with a new addition being the Fifty Seconds, a restaurant by chef Rui Silvestre located in Lisbon. The Fifty Seconds offers a memorable gastronomic experience aimed at highlighting the food inspired by the sea, featuring a tasting menu called 'Fauna and Flora' that boasts exquisite textures and subtle flavors. This recognition not only elevates the restaurant's prestige but also highlights the caliber of culinary talent emerging from Portugal's gastronomic scene.
Despite the accolades, Portugal has yet to have any restaurants rated with three stars, the highest distinction in the Michelin Guide. Currently, Paris, France, remains unrivaled with ten three-star establishments, indicating that while Portuguese cuisine is gaining recognition, it still has room to grow in the elite classification of culinary experiences. The continued efforts of Portuguese chefs and restaurateurs may eventually lead to this coveted three-star rating, further enhancing the country's presence in the international culinary arena.
