Snow will pile up to 20 centimeters – then a dangerous turn comes

A significant snowstorm has hit southern Finland, causing dangerous driving conditions as a warning for icy roads follows.

A major snowstorm struck Finland early Thursday morning, leading to substantial snowfall, particularly in the southern regions. According to weather warnings from the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the worst conditions are reported in areas such as Uusimaa, Varsinais-Suomi, Satakunta, Kanta-Häme, Päijät-Häme, Kymenlaakso, Etelä-Karjala, Pirkanmaa, and Etelä-Savo. Meteorologist Sara Salonen warned that the snowfall is dense in many areas, especially during the afternoon commute, emphasizing the need for caution on the roads.

The driving conditions are particularly hazardous as the snowstorm progresses, with predictions that temperatures will rise from the west. This change in conditions means that lighter precipitation will transition from snow to sleet and potentially rain, significantly increasing the risk of slippery road surfaces. The meteorologist stressed that commuters should remain vigilant, especially in the afternoon as they return home from work.

Warnings for icy conditions have been issued across the affected regions, urging drivers to be cautious and prepared for rapidly changing weather. As the snowstorm unfolds, the combination of heavy snowfall and the anticipated rise in temperatures poses a serious threat to public safety, particularly for those on the roads during peak travel times.
