Warning from the Meteorological Institute for Those Getting Behind the Wheel Now - A 10-Centimeter Threat Has Emerged Overnight

A snowfall of around ten centimeters in southern Finland has prompted a warning about hazardous driving conditions.

A recent snowfall in southern Finland has led to advisories from the Finnish Meteorological Institute urging caution during Thursday's commuter traffic. The accumulation of soft and light snow, which is prone to compacting into slippery layers on road surfaces, has been reported in the capital region and across southern counties. This accumulation can make driving perilous due to the icy conditions that develop when vehicles drive over the snow.

Heikki Sinisalo, a meteorologist from the Finnish Meteorological Institute, highlighted that while the snow is light and fluffy, it is not harmless. The soft snow can easily adhere to roads, creating dangerously slick surfaces that could catch drivers off guard. The weather warnings are particularly relevant for regions including Varsinais-Suomi, Uusimaa, Päijät-Häme, Kymenlaakso, and South Karelia, where the authorities are advising motorists to remain vigilant up until at least 11 AM.

Given the potential for hazardous road conditions, the public is being reminded to exercise increased caution when driving. As winter weather becomes more severe in Finland, it is essential for drivers to be prepared for variable road conditions and to ensure their vehicles are equipped for safe travel in snowy weather.
