Snowfall continues - warnings of poor driving conditions
Heavy snowfall has swept across Finland, posing a risk for poor driving conditions especially in eastern and central areas of the country.
A significant snowstorm hit Finland during the night leading into Sunday, and snowfall is expected to continue throughout the day. The snow front has progressed to the Jyväskylä region by 9 AM, with the heaviest snowfall reported in Varsinais-Suomi, Keski-Suomi, and Pohjois-Savo areas. As evening approaches, the snowfall is predicted to weaken, particularly in the western parts of the country, where clearer weather is expected later on Sunday.
In response to the severe winter weather, the Finnish Meteorological Institute has issued warnings for poor driving conditions in eastern and central areas. These warnings are in effect for several municipalities including Uusimaa, Päijät-Häme, Kymenlaakso, Etelä-Karjala, Keski-Suomi, Etelä-Savo, Pohjois-Savo, Pohjois-Karjala, and Kainuu. The regions are experiencing icy road conditions, posing potential risks for drivers navigating main roads, particularly in southern Finland where conditions have been assessed as poor to very poor.
The snowy conditions coincide with winter holiday traffic, resulting in increased vehicles on the road. Authorities emphasize the importance of caution for drivers, especially given the potential hazards posed by the icy conditions and ongoing snowfall. Motorists are advised to stay informed about weather conditions and to drive safely as they travel during the busy holiday period.
