In the Saeima Elections, 110 Voting Stations in Riga Will Be Accessible to People in Wheelchairs
In the upcoming Saeima elections, 110 voting stations in Riga will be accessible to individuals using wheelchairs, increasing the total to 70% of all stations.
In the upcoming Saeima elections scheduled for the autumn, it has been announced that 110 out of 158 voting stations in Riga will be accessible for people in wheelchairs. This represents an increase from the previous municipal elections, where only 104 stations were accessible, thus improving accessibility for disabled voters. The Riga City Council's External Communications Department made this announcement, underscoring a commitment to inclusivity in the electoral process.
The decision to enhance the number of accessible stations comes as part of the local government's initiative to prioritize accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges. At a recent meeting of the Advisory Council for Non-Governmental Organizations Representing Persons with Disabilities, Ilmārs Pilinieks, the Chairman of the Riga City Election Commission, elaborated on the criteria for choosing the locations of the voting stations. Preference is given to sites that ensure proper wheelchair access, signaling a focused effort to accommodate voters with disabilities.
This initiative not only reflects a growing awareness of the necessity for inclusive services but also empowers disabled individuals to engage in the democratic process without facing physical barriers. Moreover, if a voter with mobility impairments arrives at a station and cannot enter the premises, they are provided with options to cast their vote, ensuring that all eligible citizens can participate in the elections unhindered.
