So that votes could be counted even during technical interruptions - preparations for elections are proceeding on schedule

Latvia's upcoming Saeima elections will utilize an enhanced voting platform to ensure that votes can still be counted during technical disruptions.

In preparation for the upcoming Saeima elections in Latvia, officials are implementing a refined voting platform designed to enhance the overall voting experience and increase security. Following challenges experienced during past municipal elections, the new system will integrate an advanced election information system that connects with the voter registry, a ballot scanning system, a data publishing module, as well as additional administrative and security solutions.

The voting process will include both a Plan A and Plan B to safeguard against technical disruptions. The primary innovation is the incorporation of an automated ballot scanning system that functions both locally at polling stations and in the cloud. This hybrid approach ensures continuity: if an internet connection is lost, ballot counting can continue locally on specific computers and servers, ensuring that data is saved until the connection is restored, at which point it can be transmitted to the central system.

Moreover, the data will be synchronized with a cloud network designed for online storage, along with the central infrastructure at data centers, where it will be compiled, verified, and published. This strategic increase in technological robustness aims to provide a seamless voting experience and foster confidence in the electoral process, making sure each voice is counted regardless of unforeseen circumstances.
