Integrated collection system for municipal transport in Quito starts in April: What will happen to conventional transport?
A new integrated payment system for Quito's municipal transport will begin on April 1, 2023, affecting various transportation methods.
On April 1, 2023, an integrated payment system for municipal transport in Quito, Ecuador, will be implemented. This system is designed to streamline payment methods and will apply to the metropolitan transportation services such as the Metro de Quito, Ecovía, Trolebús, and feeder buses. Currently, the Metro uses a blue card known as 'Ciudad,' a linked identity card, or mobile payment options. The introduction of this system is expected to enhance efficiency and user experience in the public transport sector.
To accommodate various users, three different types of cards will be introduced under this new system. The 'Universal' card will be for standard fare users at $0.45, while a 'Preferential' card will cater to seniors benefiting from reduced fares. Furthermore, an additional card specifically for students will ensure that all demographic categories have their transportation needs met affordably. The rollout of these cards commenced on March 9, 2023, with initial distributions already being conducted for free to facilitate a smooth transition.
This initiative reflects a broader move towards modernizing transport infrastructure in Quito, mirroring trends seen in urban centers globally. However, it raises questions about the future of conventional transport services and how they will adapt to this integrated system. As Quito continues to develop its public transport capacity, the success of this integrated model could have significant implications for commuter habits and the economic framework of public transit in the city.
