Quito's municipal government will distribute 300,000 free transportation cards on March 9 as part of the new integrated payment system set to launch on April 1.
The Municipality of Quito is set to enhance its public transportation system with the introduction of an integrated payment mechanism, which will officially commence on April 1. To facilitate this transition and encourage user adoption, the local government will distribute 300,000 free transportation cards beginning March 9. This initiative aims to make the transit experience more efficient and user-friendly, expanding access to various forms of local transportation.
The integrated payment system will encompass the Metro de Quito and extend to other municipal transport services, including Ecovía, Trolebús, and feeder buses. Users will be able to utilize a specific card known as the Ciudad card, which is blue in color, alongside their identity document when linked to the account, or via a mobile phone. Moreover, the innovation includes QR code-enabled ticket purchase from designated booths, which will streamline user access to the transport network.
Mayor Pabel Muñoz announced the introduction of three distinct card types aimed at different user categories. The Universal card will be available for those paying the standard $0.45 fare, while a preferential card will cater to senior citizens benefitting from reduced fares. Furthermore, an additional card will be designated for students, ensuring that this new system accommodates the diverse needs of the community, foster inclusivity, and make public transport more accessible.
