Trolebus and Ecovía: 7 Stops Closed in March Due to New Payment System in Quito
Seven stops on Quito's Trolebús and Ecovía systems are temporarily closed for the installation of new payment system equipment to enhance public transport efficiency.
In March, the Trolebús and Ecovía transportation systems in Quito will witness the temporary closure of seven stops due to the installation of an integrated payment system. This initiative aims to modernize the payment methods available to city commuters, as the new system has already been implemented at several stations. The Empresa de Pasajeros has announced that in conjunction with the system's modifications, 300,000 electronic cards will be distributed to passengers, allowing them to access the newly adapted stops.
The closures will affect three Trolebús stops and four Ecovía stops, with operations expected to be streamlined by April when the integrated payment system becomes fully functional across the Metropolitan District. The move is seen as a progressive step to improve public transit for over 370,000 users relying on these transport options daily. The Quito Municipality is focusing on accommodating the new payment system while ensuring minimal disruption to commuters during the transition period.
This modernization effort reflects a growing trend towards digital payment solutions within public transport systems worldwide, aiming to reduce wait times and enhance the overall user experience. While some stops will be temporarily inaccessible, authorities are preparing alternative access points and solutions to mitigate any inconvenience for travelers in the city, showcasing a commitment to improving public transportation infrastructure in Quito.
