This is what you need to know about the new way to use municipal transport in Quito, after approval of the integrated collection system

The Quito Metropolitan Council approved an ordinance for the integrated payment system of municipal transport.

The Quito Metropolitan Council has approved an ordinance that initiates the implementation of the Integrated Collection System (SIR) for municipal transport, aimed at streamlining fare payments across the city’s transit services, including the Metro, Trolebús, and Ecovía. This comprehensive system will be accessible via an electronic card and will operate under the unified platform known as the Cuenta Ciudad, set to commence on April 1.

The SIR is expected to enhance the efficiency of Quito’s public transportation, which currently accommodates approximately 530,000 passengers daily among its Metro, Trolebús, and Ecovía services. However, it is notable that nearly 80% of Quito’s population still relies on private urban transport provided by conventional buses. This puts into perspective the challenges ahead for the SIR as it seeks to encourage a shift towards public transport.

In addition to the operational aspects, the municipal government has announced plans to engage in collaborative discussions with private transport operators, focusing on gradually integrating surface services into the SIR framework. This collaboration is crucial for ensuring a comprehensive and efficient public transportation network that attracts more users and alleviates road congestion in the city, ultimately promoting sustainable urban mobility.
