Quito bets on bus lanes to save up to 30 minutes of travel: here's how the mobility plan will be implemented
Quito plans to implement several Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects to significantly reduce travel times in the city.
The city of Quito is launching an ambitious mobility plan that includes the development of over ten Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects as part of its Sustainable Mobility Master Plan from 2022 to 2042. These BRT systems, similar to existing transport options like the Trole and Ecovía, will operate on dedicated lanes, allowing for faster travel times and defined stops. The goal is to enhance public transport efficiency, making it a more competitive option against private vehicles while being a cost-effective alternative to constructing a metro system.
Luis Borja, a transportation expert, highlights the proven effectiveness of BRT systems in managing high passenger volumes and reducing travel times. The introduction of designated BRT corridors is expected to save commuters up to 30 minutes on their journeys through Quito, addressing a growing demand for efficient public transportation. By investing in this modern transport infrastructure, the city aims not only to improve mobility but also to encourage greater use of public transport, thereby reducing traffic congestion.
The medium-term projects outlined in the plan include several key BRT lines connecting important areas across Quito, such as between Conocoto and Sangolquí, Nayón and Bicentenario, and Carapungo and Calderón. Each of these routes has been strategically selected to maximize impact on mobility and accessibility within the metropolitan area. This initiative represents a significant step forward for Quito in adapting to urban growth and sustainability goals, providing residents with a more reliable and faster means of transit.
