Quito Council approves second debate on the integrated collection system to begin on April 1
The Metropolitan Council of Quito approved an integrated collection system that will be operational starting April 1, featuring a new universal card for various user categories.
In its second debate, the Metropolitan Council of Quito has passed an ordinance that enables the implementation of an integrated collection system, set to launch on April 1. This new system will introduce an additional card for three specific user groups: the Universal card for those paying the standard fare of $0.45, a Preferential card for those eligible for reduced fares, such as senior citizens, and a card designated for students. The distribution of these cards began on March 9 at various locations throughout the city.
On March 18, officials from the Mobility Secretariat attended the council session to present several operational adjustments and regulations regarding the use of the citizen cards. The discussions also established a definitive date for the activation of this modernized collection system, which aims to streamline fare payments and improve user accessibility. The ordinance was approved with 16 votes in favor, one against, and five absences.
This new initiative reflects a broader effort by Quito's administration to enhance public transport efficiency and inclusivity. By accommodating different user groups through targeted pricing, the city hopes to encourage public transit usage and ease financial burdens on vulnerable populations. As the April 1 launch date approaches, the city's administration is expected to ensure a smooth transition to this integrated system, which could serve as a model for other cities in Ecuador and beyond.
