IG presents N2.4 billion cheques to families of fallen officers
The Inspector-General of Police in Nigeria presented N2.4 billion in cheques to the families of deceased officers as part of the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.
In a significant gesture of support, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, presented a total of N2.4 billion in cheques to 1,075 beneficiaries, which include the next-of-kin of deceased police officers. This presentation, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, signifies the ongoing commitment of the Nigerian Police Force to aid the families of those who have served and sacrificed their lives while in duty. The funds cover multiple policy years and demonstrate a concerted effort to address outstanding claims and ensure that the welfare of these families is prioritized.
In a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, it's highlighted that the cheques, amounting to ₦2,435,421,584.11, will cater to settlements for the years 2018 through 2026, indicating a lengthy process of recovery for insurance claims. Lydia Ameh, the Force Insurance Officer, emphasized that these disbursements reflect the determination of IGP Olatunji Disu to safeguard the welfare of officers and their surviving relatives. The funds were sourced from long-standing insurance obligations, pointing to a recognition of the delays that have historically affected beneficiaries.
This act of financial support from the Nigerian Police reflects broader themes of accountability and responsiveness in governmental institutions towards their personnel’s families. As a nation that grapples with various security challenges, acknowledging the sacrifices made by officers is crucial in maintaining morale within the ranks and reassures current and future officers of institutional support, thereby fostering a sense of security regarding their own welfare and that of their families.
