Police pay N22.3m to 16 families of fallen officers in Benue
The Nigeria Police Force has compensated the families of 16 officers who died in active service with N22.3 million.
The Nigeria Police Force has officially paid out a total of N22.3 million to the families of 16 officers who lost their lives while serving in Benue State. This presentation occurred on a Friday in Makurdi, where the next of kin of the deceased were in attendance to receive the cheques personally from police officials. The initiative is part of the police welfare programs aimed at providing financial assistance to the families of officers who die in the line of duty.
Commissioner of Police Ifeanyi Emenari, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police for Finance and Administration, Mohammed Yakubu, expressed condolences to the families during the presentation. He highlighted the origins of the funds, which came from police welfare schemes, including Group Life Assurance and Group Accident benefits. While acknowledging that monetary compensation cannot replace lost lives, he emphasized that the payment would serve to ease the financial burden faced by these families in the immediate aftermath of their loss.
Emenari encouraged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely and consider investing in business ventures to ensure sustainable financial support. This gesture underscores the police's commitment to the welfare of their personnel and their families and reflects the significant sacrifices made by officers in fulfilling their duties. It also sheds light on the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement officers in Nigeria, where the risks associated with their profession can have lasting impacts on the families they leave behind.
