IG directs police trust fund to prioritise junior officers’ welfare

The Inspector-General of Police in Nigeria has urged the Police Trust Fund to focus on welfare programs for junior officers, highlighting their essential role in frontline policing.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has emphasized the importance of prioritizing the welfare of junior-ranked officers in the Nigeria Police Force. During a meeting with the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), Alhaji Mohammed Sheidu, he highlighted that these junior officers bear the brunt of operational duties and are critical in maintaining law and order across the country. This call was made in recognition of the challenges faced by junior officers who often work under strenuous conditions without adequate support.

During the courtesy visit at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the IG underscored the need for targeted welfare interventions directed explicitly at junior officers. He stressed that these individuals, who are usually in the lower ranks, carry substantial operational burdens, and their welfare should be a priority for the NPTF. The discussions also aimed to strengthen collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the Trust Fund, particularly in light of ongoing reforms meant to enhance the police's operational effectiveness.

This initiative to improve the welfare of junior officers not only aims to boost morale but also to enhance the overall effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force. By investing in the frontline personnel who directly engage with the communities, the police can improve public safety and trust. If successfully implemented, these welfare programs could lead to better working conditions for officers and potentially improve crime-fighting outcomes in Nigeria.
