No illegal migrants recorded at the border with Belarus
Lithuanian border authorities report no illegal migrant crossings from Belarus or neighboring countries recently.
According to Lithuanian border authorities, there have been no cases of illegal migrant crossings from Belarus as of late. Latvia reported no migrants turned back on Friday, and Poland similarly reported no individuals pushed back on Thursday. This marks a continuation of trends where the last two illegal crossing attempts into Lithuania occurred on February 26 this year, indicating a significant decrease in the number of illegal migrants attempting to enter the country.
In total, Lithuania has turned back 37 illegal migrants this year, a stark contrast to the previous year when there were more than 1,600 attempts to illegally enter the country from Belarus. The sharp decline in crossings suggests effective border management or a shift in migration patterns in the region. This contrasts with 2021, when a surge of migrants from Belarus occurred, widely attributed to the Belarusian government's alleged orchestration of the migrant crisis as a geopolitical tool against the EU.
The ongoing situation reflects the continuing tensions between the EU and Belarus, with implications for regional security and migration policy in Eastern Europe. The EU countries, particularly those bordering Belarus, remain on high alert for any resurgence in illegal crossings as they navigate the complex dynamics of migration and diplomatic relations with Minsk.
