No illegal migrants recorded at the border with Belarus

Lithuanian border officials report that no illegal migrants have been recorded attempting entry from Belarus in recent weeks.

In a recent update, Lithuanian border officials indicated that there have been no illegal migrants recorded at the border with Belarus. On consecutive days, Latvian border guards reported no attempts to turn back migrants, and Polish authorities similarly did not redirect any this week. The last known illegal cross-border attempt into Lithuania occurred on February 26, involving two migrants who were not allowed entry. This marks a significant decrease compared to previous years, as Lithuania has actively managed its border situation amid an ongoing migrant crisis.

This year, only 37 illegal migrants have been denied entry into Lithuania, a notable decline from previous peaks. In 2022, over 1,600 illegal attempts were documented, while the number was around 1,002 two years prior. The sharp increase in migrant attempts since 2021 has been largely attributed to the Belarusian government's alleged orchestration of these flows, aimed to pressure the European Union and exploit the geopolitical tensions in the area.

The decrease in attempted crossings indicates a potentially stabilizing border situation for Lithuania, following rigorous border control measures implemented over the past few years. However, the underlying tensions with Belarus remain, suggesting that while immediate threats may have decreased, the broader issues of migration and border security in the region reflect ongoing political unrest and conflict. Authorities remain vigilant as the situation develops, particularly regarding Belarus' influence on migrant flows.
