At the Border with Belarus, No Illegal Migrants Recorded Again
Lithuanian border officials report no illegal migrants trying to cross from Belarus for a while, with a noted drop in attempted crossings this year compared to previous years.
According to Lithuanian border officials, there have been no records of illegal migrants attempting to cross the border from Belarus recently. Specifically, Latvian border guards reported on the previous Tuesday that they also did not turn back any migrants, while Polish authorities denied entry to 13 individuals on Monday who tried to cross illegally. This follows a report from Lithuania indicating that two migrants last attempted to cross on February 26 this year.
The data reveals a significant reduction in illegal crossings this year, with only 37 migrants denied entry to Lithuania thus far. This continues a trend that began in 2021 when the influx of migrants from Belarus surged, a situation that Western governments attributed to the actions of the Minsk regime, which was believed to be orchestrating the movement of migrants towards the borders of the European Union. This figure starkly contrasts with over 1,600 attempts recorded last year and 1,002 in the year before.
The situation reflects ongoing border tensions in Eastern Europe and the impact of political dynamics between Belarus and EU countries. The substantial decrease in attempted crossings could indicate either improvements in border enforcement or a reduction in migrants willing to undertake the perilous journey through Belarus. As the EU continues to manage its external borders, this context remains critical for understanding migration trends and regional stability, especially in relation to Belarusian government strategies.
