No illegal migrants recorded at the border with Belarus
There have been no illegal migrant attempts recorded at the Lithuanian border with Belarus, according to recent reports.
Border authorities report no incidents of illegal migrant crossings at the Lithuanian border with Belarus. On Thursday, Latvian border guards also did not turn back any migrants, while Polish officials denied entry to three individuals attempting illegal crossings on Wednesday. This reflects a trend observed since late February, when two migrants were similarly turned away, marking a significant level of border control in the region.
Since the beginning of the year, Lithuania has seen a total of 37 illegal migrants denied entry, a notable decrease compared to previous years with over 1,600 attempts recorded in 2022 and about 1,002 in the year before that. The steep decline in recorded illegal crossing attempts can be attributed to strict border enforcement measures. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, particularly in the context of the ongoing tensions with Belarus.
The surge in migrant flows from Belarus into Eastern European countries began in 2021, a situation that Western nations attribute to the Belarusian government's actions of orchestrating border disruptions. This ongoing crisis remains a crucial point of contention in EU-Belarus relations, as European nations strive to manage border security while dealing with political pressures and humanitarian concerns.
