No illegal migrants reported at the border with Belarus
Lithuanian border guards have reported no illegal migrant crossings from Belarus in recent days, continuing a trend of decreased entries.
Lithuanian border guards announced that there have been no reports of illegal migrants attempting to cross the border from Belarus in recent days, with Latvian and Polish border guards also reporting similar trends. On Monday, two migrants were denied entry into Lithuania after a 26-day hiatus, indicating a significant reduction in illegal crossings compared to previous years when thousands attempted to breach the border.
In total, Lithuania has seen only 16 illegal migrants turned away this year, a stark contrast to the over 1,600 attempted crossings from Belarus last year and 1,002 the year before. The influx of migrants from Belarus, particularly into Eastern EU states, began in earnest in 2021, with Western governments attributing the crisis to the actions of the Minsk regime, which has allegedly organized the flow of migrants as a form of political pressure against the EU.
Since the onset of the migration crisis incited by Belarus, Lithuanian authorities have prevented more than 24,600 illegal migrants from entering the country, reflecting a concerted effort to bolster border security and manage the ongoing challenges posed by irregular migration in the region. This trend of lower illegal crossings may indicate a potential decline in the organized migrations that have troubled Lithuania and its neighbors, although concerns remain regarding the long-term implications of border security and regional stability.
