City Hall of SP hires study for the implementation of a cable car in Brasilândia and VLT in the center
The São Paulo City Hall has contracted a study for the economic-financial evaluation of a proposed cable car in Brasilândia and a VLT project in the city center.
One year after the public response to the proposed cable car in Brasilândia, located in the northern zone of São Paulo, the city's administration has engaged the Fundação Instituto de Pesquisas Econômicas (Fipe) for a comprehensive economic-financial evaluation regarding the potential implementation of this new form of public transport. The contract, awarded for R$ 1.9 million, includes R$ 700,000 allocated specifically for the cable car study and has a duration of 14 months.
Alongside the cable car project, the evaluation will also cover the 'Bonde São Paulo' initiative, which consists of an electric light rail vehicle (VLT) system planned for the city center, a component of Mayor Ricardo Nunes’ (MDB) Metas Plan. The decision to explore these transport options comes after prior debates surrounding the cable car, which faced scrutiny partly due to previous criticisms from Nunes regarding rival candidate Pablo Marçal's advocacy for cable cars during the 2024 municipal election campaign.
Despite past controversies, which included Nunes labeling the cable car situation as 'specific' and tied to geographic constraints, this recent study suggests a shift towards innovative public transport solutions as the city seeks to enhance connectivity and mobility within its urban landscape. The outcomes of the study will likely impact the future of public transportation in São Paulo, particularly in underserved areas like Brasilândia, reflecting ongoing efforts to improve urban infrastructure and meet the needs of its growing population.
