Nigeria, Ghana sign deal on air search, rescue operations

Nigeria and Ghana have signed a cooperation agreement to enhance search and rescue operations for aircraft in distress between the two countries.

The Nigerian and Ghanaian Civil Aviation Authorities have formalized their collaboration through a newly signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at improving search and rescue operations for aircraft in distress. This agreement was made official during a signing ceremony attended by key officials from both countries. Chris Najomo, the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, represented Nigeria, while Stephen Arthur, his Ghanaian counterpart, signed on behalf of Ghana.

The MoU is intended to create a more robust framework for search and rescue operations, facilitating a concerted effort to respond effectively to aircraft emergencies in the region. In his comments, Najomo emphasized that this agreement is not just about adhering to regulatory obligations; it embodies a mutual humanitarian commitment that reflects the cooperative spirit between Nigeria and Ghana. This operational collaboration is expected not only to enhance safety measures but also to build trust and favorable relations between the two nations.

As air traffic continues to grow between West African nations, strengthening search and rescue frameworks becomes vital for aviation safety. The initiative underscores the importance of regional partnerships in responding to emergencies and shows a commitment to protecting lives in the air. Both countries are now better positioned to conduct joint operations and resource sharing, which will ultimately benefit airlines and passengers traveling in and out of their jurisdictions.
