Citizens of third countries most involved in accidents in Latvia last year were from Russia, India, and Ukraine
Latvia reported that citizens from Russia, India, and Ukraine were the most involved in traffic accidents last year among those from third countries.
In Latvia, a report was presented in the Saeima's Internal Security Subcommittee revealing that in the past year, the highest number of traffic accidents involving third-country nationals were with citizens from Russia, India, and Ukraine. The data, provided by the Traffic Ministry's Director of Road Infrastructure, Tālivaldis Vectirāns, indicates that there were a total of 975 traffic incidents involving third-country citizens. Russian citizens were implicated in the largest share, with 327 accidents, followed by Indian nationals at 160, and Ukrainian nationals at 146.
Further breakdown of the statistics shows that citizens from Uzbekistan and Belarus also featured in significant numbers, with 111 and 97 accidents respectively, while Pakistani citizens encountered 35 incidents. The overall pattern suggests a concerning trend, as the involvement of citizens from these nations raises questions about driver safety and road use issues within Latvia. It indicates that more attention could be necessary to address the factors contributing to these incidents.
As the statistics show a noticeable concentration of traffic incidents involving foreign nationals, it might lead to discussions about road safety protocols, awareness campaigns, and appropriate policies for integrating international drivers on Latvian roads. With an increasing number of foreign nationals residing in Latvia, this information could prompt lawmakers to evaluate existing traffic laws and preventive measures to enhance road safety for everyone.
