Mpox cases more than double in 20 days, with 129 confirmations in Brazil
The number of confirmed mpox cases in Brazil has surged to 129, with São Paulo accounting for the majority, as health officials monitor the situation.
The Ministry of Health of Brazil reported that the count of confirmed mpox cases has risen to 129 since the beginning of 2026, according to their latest monitoring report updated on February 5. São Paulo leads the country with 86 cases, which makes up 66% of the total, followed by Rio de Janeiro with 19 cases, Roraima with 10, and several other states with fewer confirmations. This marks a significant increase in cases, which have more than doubled within just a few weeks.
As of now, there are 570 cases under investigation and 7 classified as probable, though Brazil has not yet recorded any deaths attributed to mpox this year. The scenario reflects the previous year's data, which noted 1,079 cases and two fatalities due to the disease in 2025. Health officials are keeping a close eye on the rising numbers and the general state of mpox spread across different regions in Brazil.
Despite the rising infection rates, the Ministry of Health assures that the current situation does not indicate a crisis. The Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) is fully prepared for the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of mpox cases, highlighting the country's resources to handle potential outbreaks effectively. Health officials encourage public vigilance while reassuring that the infrastructure is robust enough to manage the ongoing health issue.
