Two more cases of mpox confirmed in Rondônia; total rises to six
Two additional cases of mpox have been confirmed in Rondônia, Brazil, bringing the total to six confirmed cases in the state.
On Monday, the State Health Surveillance Agency of Rondônia (Agevisa) confirmed two new cases of mpox, increasing the total number of confirmed cases in the state to six. The new diagnoses were previously considered suspected and have now been verified through laboratory testing. Among the patients, there are five men aged between 20 and 35 years and a 16-year-old adolescent. The outbreaks were primarily recorded in the state capital, Porto Velho.
Mpox, a viral disease that causes fever and skin lesions that develop into blisters and sores, spreads mainly through direct contact with these lesions or contaminated objects. The confirmed cases underwent clinical evaluation, received appropriate guidance, and are currently in isolation to prevent further transmission. Prior reports indicated that the state had six notifications of the disease, with four confirmations and two cases having been dismissed.
The health authorities had also announced that a suspicious case treated at the Cosme and Damião Children's Hospital was dismissed after diagnosis. The rise in confirmed cases underscores the importance of continued vigilance and monitoring by health officials to contain mpox, especially given its mode of transmission and potential seriousness among vulnerable populations.
