Cases of mpox rise and Brazil reaches 88 cases

Brazil has reported a steep increase in mpox cases, reaching 88 confirmed cases in 2026, almost doubling in just a few days.

Brazil is experiencing a significant uptick in mpox cases, with the total number reaching 88 confirmed cases as of this year, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health. This represents a dramatic increase, as the case count nearly doubled from just 48 confirmed cases on February 20, 2026. Thankfully, no fatalities have been documented this year, with most patients presenting only mild to moderate symptoms.

In context, Brazil had reported 1,079 mpox cases and two deaths in the previous year, marking a concerning trend as the figures are substantially higher compared to the same period last year when only 215 cases were recorded. This surge raises public health concerns, prompting health authorities to remain vigilant in their monitoring and response efforts across the country.

The geographical distribution of the current cases suggests that the majority are concentrated in São Paulo, which accounts for 62 of the 88 confirmed cases. Additional cases have been documented in states including Rio de Janeiro, Rondônia, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, the Federal District, and Paraná. The Ministry of Health is actively coordinating with state epidemiological surveillance to address the situation and mitigate further spread of the virus.
