Learn how to protect yourself from mpox; Brazil has already recorded 57 cases this year
Brazil has reported 57 cases of mpox this year, with the majority located in São Paulo, highlighting a need for public health awareness and prevention measures.
Brazil has seen a total of 57 cases of mpox since the start of 2026, with São Paulo accounting for the bulk of these cases at 50. Other confirmed cases have been reported in Rio de Janeiro (3), while one case each has emerged in the Federal District, Rondônia, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul, according to the Ministry of Health. This spike in infections has sparked concern among health officials as they work to monitor and mitigate the spread of the disease.
Among the reported cases in São Paulo, two are linked to the clade 1b, the most aggressive and rarest variant present in Brazil. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported two new cases of a recombinant strain of clades 1b and 2b in India and the United Kingdom, although symptoms in these instances were comparable to those of other clades, with no severe outcomes for patients. The WHO continues to assess the risk associated with mpox, particularly among populations at higher risk such as men who have sex with men, sex workers, and individuals with new or multiple partners.
The increase in mpox cases signals a call to action for public health measures and education on preventive practices. Individuals are encouraged to learn about the disease, understand the potential transmission methods, and adhere to guidelines issued by health authorities to safeguard themselves and others. Given that this outbreak could escalate, health practitioners are advised to remain vigilant in surveillance and reporting to contain the spread effectively.
