Brazil registers 48 cases of mpox in the first months of 2026

Brazil has confirmed 48 cases of mpox in early 2026, primarily concentrated in São Paulo, with no reported deaths.

Brazil has reported 48 confirmed cases of mpox as of the early months of 2026, with the majority of these cases occurring in São Paulo, where 41 of the cases have been identified. Other regions, including Rio de Janeiro, the Federal District, and a few states like Rondônia and Santa Catarina, have reported a smaller number of cases. The Ministry of Health has indicated that there have been no fatalities related to the mpox cases thus far, and the symptoms are generally classified as mild to moderate.

Throughout 2025, Brazil recorded a total of 1,079 mpox cases, alongside two deaths attributed to the illness. This uptick in cases at the start of 2026 has prompted the Ministry of Health to emphasize their active surveillance measures. The country's Unified Health System (SUS) is adequately equipped for the clinical management and diagnosis of mpox patients, including 14 days of contact tracing to prevent further outbreaks and transmission of the virus.

The Ministry has also issued recommendations for individuals exhibiting symptoms such as skin rashes, fever, and swollen lymph nodes to seek medical attention promptly and to consider social isolation until they receive a thorough evaluation. This approach is particularly crucial in São Paulo, which is highlighting the country's ongoing battle against mpox, with public health officials monitoring the situation closely through data provided by the Strategic Information Center in Health (Nies).
