Traffic is released on Júlio César Avenue after inspection of pedestrian bridge and mayor says responsible company will not undertake new works in Belém
Traffic was restored on Júlio César Avenue after an inspection revealed safety for continued use of the pedestrian bridge.
Traffic on Júlio César Avenue in Belém was restored in the early hours of Saturday after a technical evaluation of a pedestrian bridge over the São Joaquim Canal. The roadway was previously closed on Friday as a preventive measure due to concerns about potential structural failure. Following an emergency inspection by the Municipal Secretary of Works and Infrastructure, authorities deemed it safe for vehicles to resume passage.
The bridge is part of the Urban Park Igarapé São Joaquim project, which was promised for the 30th UN Climate Conference (COP 30) but has yet to be completed. The city's administration emphasized that the closure was precautionary, aimed at ensuring both pedestrian and driver safety while technicians assessed the bridge's integrity. During the inspection, officials clarified that the bridge is a component of the urbanization works related to the São Joaquim Canal, currently being executed by the Igarapé São Joaquim Consortium, which includes multiple construction companies.
Additionally, the mayor announced that the responsible company will not engage in future projects in Belém, indicating a significant shift in oversight and accountability for urban infrastructure in the area. This statement likely reflects broader concerns regarding public safety and infrastructure reliability amid ongoing urban development efforts, especially in context of the city's commitments to upcoming international environmental events and the need for sustainable city planning.
