Part of the traffic is blocked on Julio César Avenue after risk of pedestrian bridge collapse for COP30 work in Belém

A section of Julio César Avenue in Belém will be partially blocked due to concerns about the structural integrity of a pedestrian bridge associated with COP30 construction work.

A portion of Julio César Avenue in Belém is set to face a partial traffic blockade starting at 6 PM on Saturday, the 7th, due to safety concerns regarding a pedestrian bridge constructed over the avenue. This bridge is part of the Urban Park Igarapé São Joaquim, a project linked to preparations for the COP30 climate conference. The decision to impose this measure comes after technicians detected structural issues that may lead to the bridge's collapse.

The municipal government of Belém has announced that the blockade will affect one lane of the road heading towards the Airport-Almirante Barroso avenue, and it will allow technical teams to make necessary adjustments to the bridge's structure. During the traffic restrictions, small vehicles will be permitted to use the road, while larger vehicles will need to navigate through alternative routes. The local Security, Public Order and Mobility Secretariat (Segbel) will be present at the site to manage traffic flow and provide guidance to drivers.

This incident highlights ongoing infrastructural challenges amid the preparations for COP30, an important global climate conference to be held in Brazil. While the local government aims to ensure the safety of its infrastructure, this situation may potentially disrupt traffic and draw attention to the need for urgent maintenance work on structures impacted by such significant events.
