The Ministry of Foreign Affairs promises to contact travelers as soon as the "airBaltic" flight from the UAE is confirmed

Latvia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs will reach out to priority travelers once 'airBaltic' confirms its flight from the UAE, focusing on repatriating citizens, especially vulnerable groups.

The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has announced that it will communicate with priority travelers as soon as the national airline 'airBaltic' receives confirmation for a flight from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This initiative is part of the government's response to repatriate Latvian citizens, particularly those in vulnerable categories, such as families with young children. Efforts are being made in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport to prepare a Cabinet order concerning these repatriation flights.

Recently, news outlet 'TV3 ziņas' reported that there is significant interest in the first evacuation flight, with 168 individuals expressing a desire to return home. However, the flight can only accommodate 145 passengers, highlighting the urgency and need for effective coordination among those registered for the flight. The Ministry has indicated that the cost of this repatriation flight will amount to approximately 150,000 euros from the state budget, and ticket prices are still being calculated for the travelers.

Currently, there are 624 Latvian citizens registered for short-term travel to the UAE, with smaller numbers traveling to Israel, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain. The airspace above many Middle Eastern countries remains restricted due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, which complicates operational logistics for the planned repatriations. The effective management of this initiative will be crucial for the Ministry as it strives to ensure the safety and return of its citizens stranded abroad due to these circumstances.
