Meteorological Spring Has Begun in Latvia
Meteorological spring has officially started in Latvia as temperatures have remained above zero for five consecutive days since February 27.
Latvia has officially entered meteorological spring, defined by a continuous five-day stretch of average daily temperatures above zero degrees Celsius. According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC), this warm weather started on February 27, when the average temperature rose close to four degrees Celsius on the last day of February and the first day of March. The highest recorded temperature was +11.8 degrees on March 1 in Rēzekne.
In contrast to last year, when meteorological spring began earlier on February 22 along the Kurzeme coast and February 25 across much of the country, this year's relatively late arrival raises interest in upcoming seasonal patterns. Last year, summer-like conditions began in Daugavpils and Rēzekne by April 17. Weather forecasts suggest mostly dry conditions in the coming days, with plenty of sunshine expected during the day. Nighttime temperatures will likely drop to around +1 to -5 degrees Celsius, while warmer temperatures reaching up to +15 degrees are anticipated next week.
The LVĢMC reports that in many regions of Kurzeme and western Vidzeme, snow has already melted, leaving thicker snow cover primarily in Sēlija and Latgale, which are expected to experience changes in snow accumulation as temperatures rise. This shift represents the annual transition of seasons and impacts various sectors, from agriculture to tourism, as warmer weather finally brings a break from the harsh winter.
