In the gallery 'Pilot', school lamps buzz and reminder notes speak at the exhibition of young artists
An exhibition featuring young artists competing for the BDO Young Artist Award is taking place at Gallery 'Pilot' in Latvia, showcasing works that reflect contemporary feelings of anxiety and the search for empathy and coexistence.
The current exhibition at Gallery 'Pilot' in Latvia highlights the works of six finalists selected from 25 submissions for the BDO Young Artist Award, which offers a cash prize of 2,000 euros. These competitors are recent graduates from the master's programs of the Latvian Academy of Arts. According to Antra Priede, the Deputy Director of Study Programs at LMA, the artists collectively capture the tumultuous nature of the present day, exploring varied ways to exist in these uncertain times while seeking comfort and empathy with one another.
Among the finalists, each artist brings a unique perspective to the forefront. For instance, Kristers Krūms has created an installation titled 'Friend Box', combining found objects to explore their collective history and materiality. He articulates a vision where these items interact with one another, likening them to songs that carry the narratives embedded within them. His work exemplifies a broader theme present in the exhibition: the intersection of material culture with contemporary emotional experiences, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own connections to objects and stories.
As the exhibition unfolds, it serves not just to showcase talent but also to engage audiences in a dialogue about the current human experience. The selection process emphasizes the importance of contemporary art in expressing the complex dynamics of society, particularly as it relates to youth and their perspectives on living through a period of uncertainty. The recognition provided by the BDO Award highlights the vital role that emerging artists play in shaping cultural discourse, making this event a critical platform for new voices in the arts community.
