Art Scene in Latvia – Fragmented, Yet Alive. The First Latvian Art Year Award Will Be Presented
The inaugural Latvian Art Year Award aims to recognize the diverse art scene in Latvia despite its challenges and fragmentation.
The inaugural Latvian Art Year Award is poised to highlight the varied and vibrant art scene across Latvia, as discussed by key figures including Kitija Vasiļjeva, the award's creative producer, and art scientist Aiga Dzalbe on the program 'Art Gymnastics.' The conversation explores the motivation behind the award, its nomination process, and the challenges of capturing the full spectrum of Latvia's artistic life, which ranges from galleries in Riga to youth initiatives in the regions.
According to Vilnis Vējš, the award emerged in 2022 with a new jury selected to assess not only artists but also specific works, exhibitions, educational programs, and publications. This initiative comes at a time when other cultural sectors, like music, have a long-established history of annual awards, in contrast to the visual arts in Latvia, where the Purvīša Award has been the primary recognition for many years, awarded every two years.
With numerous nominations and a commitment to inclusivity, the Latvian Art Year Award hopes to fill a significant gap in celebrating the achievements of local artists and fostering a sense of community. The initiative also serves to encourage dialogue and recognition across different forms of art within the country, bridging the gap between established artists and emerging talents.
