Young Artists Wanting to Become 'Scary Kids'... A New Sensation and Format Spring Exhibition Lineup

A new exhibition featuring young artists in Seoul showcases innovative works that challenge traditional formats and expressions, reflecting fresh perspectives.

In Seoul, a wave of young artists is reviving the local art scene with a series of exhibitions under the theme of 'becoming scary kids.' These showcases are spread across various galleries in neighborhoods such as Bukchon and Insadong, along with areas currently embroiled in redevelopment controversies like Sewoon Plaza. The exhibits feature works from artists aged 20 to 40 who are breaking away from conventional artistic expressions, offering visitors a refreshing experience in contemporary art. Artworks range from paintings to installations, emphasizing new sensibilities that invite exploration.

One particularly notable exhibition is located at Gallery Sososo in the heart of Seoul near Cheonggyecheon, offering a window view of the ongoing tensions surrounding redevelopment. Curated by Kim Hyung-kwan, a professor of western painting at Seoul National University, the exhibition titled 'Shell and Kernel' features six young artists whose works delve into intimate emotions and memories through still lifes, landscapes, and abstract concepts. Despite the overarching theme of 'shell and kernel,' artists like Jeong Seo-hyun and Sim Kyung-ah explore personal motifs and the entanglement of memory and image, showcasing a variety of artistic approaches that reflect individual perspectives.

The exhibition also includes diverse interpretations of the relationship between existence and gravity, alongside thought-provoking artworks depicting buoyancy and diving. Additionally, at the YPC Space on the motorcycle street of Toekgye-ro 4ga, artists Lee Yoo-kyung and Choi Ji-soo present a two-person exhibition titled 'House in Between,' which explores the imagination surrounding women's bodies and domestic spaces. This multi-faceted approach to contemporary issues and personal narratives reflects the dynamic future of art in Seoul, making it a destination for art enthusiasts looking to engage with the innovative expressions of emerging artists.
