The coastal region of Baixada Santista in São Paulo has reported a troubling 128 drowning incidents over the recent Carnival holiday period, according to the Maritime Firefighting team (GBMar). Among these incidents, the city of Guarujá stood out with 76 cases of drowning and 137 individuals rescued. Tragically, one fatality was confirmed, involving a 15-year-old boy from São Paulo who drowned at Praia do Pequerê. The boy went missing on Saturday and was found deceased the following day after being located by search teams.

The GBMar highlighted that their proactive efforts, particularly from lifeguards, played a crucial role in the high number of rescues achieved during the festival. The majority of drowning incidents were concentrated in Guarujá, indicating the beach area's popularity and the accompanying risks during peak holiday seasons. With an influx of visitors to beaches during Carnival, safety measures and public awareness campaigns were evidently necessary to prevent such tragedies.
