Baixada Santista registers 55 traffic deaths in two months, an increase of almost 50%
Baixada Santista in Brazil saw a surge in traffic fatalities, with 55 deaths reported in January and February, marking a nearly 50% increase from the previous year.
In the region of Baixada Santista, 55 individuals lost their lives in traffic incidents between January and February of this year, indicating a significant rise of 48.6% compared to the same timeframe in 2025, which recorded only 37 fatalities. This surge is reported by the State of São Paulo’s Traffic Incident Management Information System, known as Infosiga, highlighting alarming trends in road safety in this area.
The statistical analysis reveals that the number of pedestrian accidents increased from 10 to 17, equating to a notable 70% rise. Moreover, deaths involving cars and motorcycles also saw concerning increases of 60% and 43.8% respectively. Among the victims was social media influencer Arthur Henrique Doria de Vasconcelos, who tragically died in a motorcycle accident in São Vicente, underlining the human toll of these statistics.
This uptick in fatalities during the first two months of 2026 raises questions about road safety measures in place and their effectiveness. The report indicates a particularly deadly January, as it alone accounted for 33 of the 55 deaths. As the authorities gather data from a variety of official sources, including police reports, the hope is to identify patterns that could help in implementing strategies to combat the rising trend of traffic-related deaths in the region.
