Snow Cover: In One Part of Lithuania – Little, In Another – Over Half a Meter

In various regions of Lithuania, snow cover varies significantly, with some areas seeing over half a meter of snow while others have only 13-17 cm.

Lithuania is currently experiencing varied snow coverage across different regions, with the most substantial accumulation reported in parts of Western Lithuania, particularly in the Raseiniai and Pasvalys districts where snow depth exceeds half a meter. Other areas are seeing snow depths ranging between 25 to 45 cm, while the southern part of the country has the least snow coverage, measured between 13 to 17 cm.

The weather also indicates that the frost layer remains relatively shallow throughout the country, generally not exceeding 10 to 15 cm. However, in certain meteorological stations such as Varėna, Kaunas, and Kybartai, the frost layer can reach as deep as 35 to 36 cm. This discrepancy hints at varying ground conditions and may influence agricultural and ecological considerations in the affected regions, particularly where snow has been cleared and the frost layer becomes more pronounced.

In terms of immediate weather forecasts, light snowfall is expected today and tomorrow, with a drier day anticipated on Friday. However, a new wave of precipitation is expected to arrive from the west on Saturday afternoon or evening, potentially altering the current snow and frost situation further. This meteorological activity is crucial for both winter sports and local economies that depend on winter conditions for tourism and other activities.
