A snowstorm is raging in Lithuania – 10 cm of snow has fallen and the forecast indicates more to come

Lithuania is experiencing a significant snowstorm, with reports of 10 cm of snow already fallen and additional snow expected in the coming days.

Lithuania is currently facing a severe snowstorm, characterized by heavy snowfall and challenging weather conditions across many regions. On Thursday, various forms of precipitation were reported, primarily snow and sleet, with some southern areas receiving rain. Fog, freezing rain, and icy conditions were present in certain locations, with temperatures ranging from -3 to +2 degrees Celsius, and in some northern areas, even dropping to -6 degrees Celsius.

As the snowstorm progressed into the night, heavy snowfall continued in many areas. The lowest recorded temperatures overnight were between 0 to -5 degrees Celsius, with reports of areas possibly seeing temperatures as low as -7 degrees. During the previous 24 hours, the most precipitation was recorded in Nida (11.5 mm), followed by Ventė (9.2 mm), Kelmė (9.1 mm), and other coastal regions like Klaipėda and Tauragė experiences between 8-9 mm of precipitation, leading to a snow cover thickness increase of 8 to 11 cm in some places.

Forecasts indicate that on Friday, a contrasting cyclone from the southwest will approach Lithuania, promising even more severe weather, especially in northern and western regions where heavy snowfalls are expected. Snow accumulation could increase by an additional 7 to 20 cm in various locations, compounded by strong northeast winds, creating more hazardous conditions in affected areas.
