No illegal migrants recorded at the border with Belarus for 20 days

Lithuanian authorities report that there have been no illegal migrants attempting to cross the border with Belarus for 20 days, following a trend where migration attempts have significantly decreased compared to previous years.

According to Lithuanian border guard data, there have been 20 consecutive days without any recorded illegal migrants crossing from Belarus into Lithuania. This marks a significant drop in migration attempts, reflecting a wider trend observed this year, where only 14 illegal migrants have been admitted into the country. Last year, the situation was markedly different, with over 1,600 attempts to illegally enter Lithuania from Belarus documented, as part of what has been termed a migration crisis instigated by the Belarusian regime.

The decrease in attempted crossings coincides with similar reports from neighboring countries — Latvia and Poland — which also noted that they did not turn back any illegal migrants recently. This collective decrease emphasizes a shift in the dynamics of the migration crisis that arose in 2021, when the eastern EU member states faced an unprecedented influx of migrants, which Western nations have accused the Belarusian government of organizing. The situation has led to heightened tensions and has prompted several countries to reinforce their border security measures.

Since the onset of the Belarusian-induced migration crisis, Lithuanian border guards have prevented over 24,600 illegal migrants from entering the country. The ongoing stability in border control is critical for maintaining national security and reflects the effectiveness of the measures put in place by the Lithuanian government in response to the humanitarian and geopolitical challenges posed by the situation in Belarus.
