No illegal migrants recorded on the border with Belarus for 21 days

Lithuanian border authorities report that there have been no illegal migrants crossing from Belarus for over three weeks.

According to the latest reports from Lithuanian border authorities, there have been no illegal migrants attempting to cross into the country from Belarus for a period of 21 days. The data also includes information from neighboring countries, with Latvian border guards not turning back any illegal attempts on Tuesday, and Polish authorities reporting a similar situation on Monday. This marks a significant shift compared to previous years when thousands of illegal crossings were recorded, particularly during the spike in migrants seeking to enter the EU from Belarus that began in 2021.

In total, Lithuania has admitted only 14 illegal migrants this year, a stark contrast to the 1,600 attempts made last year, and over 1,000 in the year prior. The significant reduction in irregular migration attempts highlights the effectiveness of border enforcement strategies implemented by the Lithuanian government. Moreover, this increase in border security is part of a broader response to accusations that the Belarusian government has been deliberately orchestrating a migrant crisis to destabilize the EU.

Since the onset of the migration crisis fueled by Belarus, Lithuanian authorities have prevented more than 24,600 individuals from crossing the border illegally. This ongoing situation reflects the complex geopolitical tensions between the EU and Belarus and raises questions about human rights and regional stability. The European Union remains concerned about the situation in Belarus and the potential for renewed migrant flows, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strict border controls while addressing the underlying humanitarian issues.
