Illegal migrants at the border with Belarus have not been recorded for 18 days
Lithuanian border officials report that there have been no instances of illegal migrants attempting to cross the border from Belarus in the past 18 days, marking a significant drop from previous years.
For the past 18 days, Lithuania has not recorded any instances of illegal migrants attempting to cross the border from Belarus, according to border officials. This stark decline follows a significant operation where Latvian and Polish border guards also reported not turning away any migrants seeking to enter their countries recently. In total, this year Lithuania has barred 14 illegal migrants from entering, showing a dramatic reduction compared to previous years when thousands attempted to cross illegally.
In 2021, there was a surge in migrants trying to enter Eastern EU countries from Belarus, a situation that Western countries attribute to the orchestrated actions of the Minsk regime. The report highlights how from the beginning of the migration crisis sparked by Belarus, Lithuanian authorities have rejected over 24,600 asylum seekers from illegally crossing into the country. With the rise in attempted crossings in previous years, this sharp decrease in illegal crossings hints at the effectiveness of border security measures now in place.
The crisis essentially began as political tensions escalated between the EU and Belarus, with many alleging a manipulation of migration flows by Belarusian authorities as a tactic to undermine EU unity and pressure its borders. Resilience at the borders of Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland is critical for Europe as they continue to deal with the implications ensuing from the Belarusian government's controversial immigration policies. This situation remains dynamic as border security remains a priority for these nations amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
