No illegal migrants recorded at the border with Belarus for more than three weeks

Lithuanian border officials report a three-week hiatus in attempts by illegal migrants from Belarus to enter the country, reflecting a significant drop compared to previous years.

Lithuanian authorities have reported that there have been no instances of illegal migrants attempting to cross the border from Belarus for over three weeks. This marks a dramatic decrease in illegal crossings, especially when contrasted with last year's figures, where more than 1,600 attempts were recorded. Meanwhile, Latvian and Polish border officials also reported similar trends of not turning back any illegal migrants recently, suggesting a regional decline in border crossing attempts.

The surge of migrants attempting to enter European Union countries from Belarus began in 2021, with Western countries accusing the Minsk regime of orchestrating this crisis. Since the onset of this migration crisis, Lithuanian border guards have prevented over 24,600 illegal migrants from entering the country, showcasing a robust response to the situation. The significant drop in illegal crossings in recent weeks could reflect a combination of improved border security measures and potentially diminishing migrant flows.

The decline in illegal crossings might imply a shift in the tactics used by those attempting to migrate to the EU or possibly indicate changing conditions and challenges faced by these individuals. As the situation evolves, it will be essential for Lithuania and its neighboring countries to maintain a vigilant stance to ensure security while also addressing the broader humanitarian aspects of the migration crisis arising from political tensions in the region.
