Rain floods the highway leading to Campos do Jordão in the Taubaté stretch
Heavy rain has flooded the Floriano Rodrigues Pinheiro highway, completely closing it off to traffic in Taubaté, impacting access to Campos do Jordão.
Heavy rainfall in the Vale do Paraíba region of Brazil, occurring between the night of Monday, Oct 9 and the morning of Tuesday, Oct 10, caused significant flooding on the Floriano Rodrigues Pinheiro highway. This flooding resulted in a complete closure of the road at the Taubaté stretch, which is critical for access to the municipality of Campos do Jordão located in the Mantiqueira mountains. The flooding was reported around 11:50 PM, affecting both directions of the highway.
The area impacted by the flood is adjacent to the Santa Tereza neighborhood in Taubaté, which experienced extensive water damage during the night, with 120 homes reported flooded and around 32 individuals left homeless. The Department of Roads and Transportation announced that the closure affected the roadway at kilometer 1.5, where waterlogged conditions made it unsafe for vehicles to proceed.
To manage the situation, authorities have provided a detour for drivers via the SP-062 highway, which is currently not facing any traffic congestion. The severe weather underlines vulnerabilities in the region's infrastructure and raises concerns about preparedness for such extreme weather events in the future.
