Main access to Campos do Jordão, Floriano Rodrigues Pinheiro Highway has been closed for more than 30 hours
The Floriano Rodrigues Pinheiro Highway in Taubaté remains completely closed for over 30 hours due to flooding caused by heavy rains in the region.
The Floriano Rodrigues Pinheiro Highway (SP-123), which runs through Taubaté, is currently entirely shut down due to severe flooding caused by heavy rain. The closure began on the night of Monday, the 9th of October, and has persisted into the morning of Wednesday, the 11th, exceeding 30 hours. The specific area affected is around kilometer 1.5 of the highway, impacting traffic in both directions. The heavy rainfall led to significant swelling of a nearby creek, which resulted in substantial water covering the highways, raising safety concerns that necessitated the closure.
As emergency teams, including the Department of Roadways (DER-SP), continue to manage the situation, they have deployed a backhoe and two trucks to the site to aid in the recovery efforts. The teams are engaged in clearing the road to ensure it can be reopened safely, although as of the latest updates, there is no estimated time for when the highway will be accessible once again. The Floriano Rodrigues Pinheiro Highway serves as a crucial route for access to Campos do Jordão, a popular tourist destination in the Mantiqueira Mountains.
This prolonged closure not only affects local traffic but also has implications for tourism, considering that Campos do Jordão is a significant vacation spot known for its seasonal attractions, especially during peak tourist seasons. Despite the progress of the recovery efforts, the community and regional authorities are faced with the challenge of ensuring safe transit while also preparing for potential weather-related disruptions in the future.
