Rain causes flooding, landslides, and wall collapse in Campos do Jordão, SP
Severe rain in Campos do Jordão caused flooding, landslides, and a wall collapse, leading to house evacuations.
A heavy rainstorm hit the city of Campos do Jordão in the Serra da Mantiqueira region, resulting in significant flooding, landslides, and the collapse of a wall on Thursday, leading to safety measures being enforced by the Civil Defense. The rain began around 6 PM and was accompanied by strong winds that caused destruction across the area.
One of the affected locations was Rua Azulão, where a landslide blocked the road; fortunately, no homes were impacted directly. The area remains isolated while recovery efforts continue. Meanwhile, on Rua Tico-Tico, a wall collapsed onto a residence, prompting Civil Defense officials to inspect the scene and subsequently declare the property unsafe, displacing the resident who has since found shelter with family members.
Additionally, flooding was reported on Avenida Frei Orestes Girardi, though the water level did not rise high enough to invade local businesses. The flooding subsided later that night as water drainage improved. The situation highlights the vulnerability of the region to extreme weather events, emphasizing the need for ongoing infrastructure improvements and community preparedness.
