Can a bus lane be re-implemented on the Rumiñahui highway?: this is what experts say about the alternative for mobility

Experts discuss the potential reimplementation of a dedicated bus lane on the Rumiñahui highway as part of Quito's public transport improvements.

In 2027, an exclusive bus lane is set to open on Galo Plaza Lazo Avenue in northern Quito, intended for all types of public transportation. This lane will stretch between El Labrador and Carcelén, where external lanes will be reinforced to ensure they are dedicated solely to public transport, aiming to reduce travel time along this major corridor. The construction work is planned to commence in May 2026.

The Mobility Secretariat aims to enhance infrastructure to manage the increased number of buses using this lane, which will also feature clear signage in the surrounding area, especially since it includes access to residential homes and commercial establishments. These measures are framed within the Sustainable Mobility Master Plan for the Metropolitan District of Quito 2022-2042, which emphasizes physically segregated lanes for public transport, designed to improve circulation and efficiency.

Implementing such exclusive lanes aligns with broader sustainability and urban mobility objectives, responding to growing transportation needs in Quito. By enhancing public transport options, authorities hope to alleviate traffic congestion and promote the use of public transit, ultimately supporting a shift toward more environmentally friendly travel habits among residents.
