Nigeria: Navy Intercepts Illegal Product, Apprehend Eight Suspects in Rivers

The Nigerian Navy has intercepted approximately 44,000 liters of suspected illegally refined petroleum products and arrested eight suspects in Rivers State during a recent operation.

The Nigerian Navy conducted an operation under Operation DELTA SENTINEL, successfully intercepting around 44,000 liters of what are believed to be illegally refined petroleum products. This operation took place in Rivers State, specifically targeting the Degema/Ogbogoro/Ogbologo area. Commodore Abiodun Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information, announced that the operation was executed by personnel on board the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) PATHFINDER, acting on credible intelligence regarding the illegal activities in the region.

As a result of the patrol, two wooden boats filled with suspected Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), which is often associated with illegal refining activities, were seized. Eight suspects were arrested during the operation, although several armed accomplices managed to escape upon seeing the patrol team. The arrested individuals, along with the recovered petroleum products, are currently in custody and are expected to be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and potential prosecution.

This incident highlights the ongoing issues of illegal refining and petroleum theft in Nigeria, raising significant concerns regarding safety, environmental impacts, and economic implications for the country. The Nigerian Navy’s continuous efforts to curb these activities through proactive measures underline the commitment to enforcing the law and protecting national resources against such illegal operations.
